India at 60 – What makes democracy tick?
On the day when the Indian democracy turns 60 I feel compelled to write about what my perspective as a vulnerable common citizen makes this democracy tick at 60. I feel that 90% of world democracy as we know them would cease to exist if we succeeded in locking down the system to prevent “profit motive” from being rampantly present in it. What if it became increasingly difficult or even nearly impossible to siphon off funds from our revenue to welfare channels. What is the possibility of taking “down payments” was removed from the system for the political class and the babus?
As a common man i feel that democracy has not survived in India because of statesmen or visionaries who upheld ideals etc etc. It has survived solely because even today its still a profit making avenue for the people involved in it. This is a painful reality for the common man; to know that the system does not sustain on the fact that we vote but on the fact that its possible to make money out of it. As a common man i don’t see India with pride when i see the republic day parade, when i hear lofty ideals proclaimed from Delhi (which sounds plastic to me).
We have not succeeded in reducing the burden of taxation on the common man; on the contrary we have only been able to increase it. Where is the pride in that. In 60 years we have not been able to make any notable progress towards self-sustaining the state. Being a person working in the corporate private sector my duties towards my organization are directed by specific goals and motives that i have to achieve to ensure my continued presence there; what if the state machinery was transformed like that. What if each changing government was given 5 years of time to achieve specific growth targets towards making governance self-sustaining by investing into profit making welfare ventures. I believe that minus the mis-use of state funds and tax money; India would have ample crores in it’s kitty to invest towards that. What if they had goals like ensuring that continuously decrease the amount of share of the exchequer that came from direct and indirect taxes? This would ensure that people who are not capable (don’t read that as people who are not educated) would only dare to take up public office. What is political parties in power were not given the right to field contestants who were currently in office a could not meet the targets.
Seems like a far-fetched utopian idea? Well as the common man this is what I would expect from India at 60. That it became a profitable place for me as a common man to make a living; raise a family. That is became a place where the poor sections of the society could get jobs in profit making government ventures.
Happy republic day to all !!!!
